Season 7 of Marvel Rivals kicked off earlier this month, upping the number of hero bans to three per team. This means that between three and six characters are guaranteed to be banned in every competitive match, giving the community more freedom over the kind of games they want to play in - and encouraging one-tricks to pick up more heroes.
However, the community has found that these bans are not being spread out across the roster. Instead, many are instabanning certain strategist characters, getting rid of those they deem to be overpowered, too easy to play as, or with ultimates that are just too annoying to work around. It's divided the playerbase, with some absolutely loving to play competitive matches without having to worry about an invincibility ult, whereas support mains are feeling unfairly targeted and reluctant to play the role.
Are Marvel Rivals Players Too Harsh With Their Hero Bans, Or Do Strategists Need Reworks?
As we can see across the community, many fans are loving the extra ban slot and using it to get rid of any strategist with an ult that pretty much pauses the game for ten seconds or so. Luna Snow is the worst for this, as it's incredibly difficult to counter her ult and get any kills while it's active. However, Cloak & Dagger are also getting targeted for their ult, as well as their survivability (the ease with which they heal themselves and get out of danger).
Aside from that, we're also seeing Gambit banned over complaints that he's overpowered, and then Loki and Mantis thrown in there for good measure. Some say they will keep banning them until the devs rebalance the characters, but in the meantime, it means that many are struggling to play as their mains.
Unsurprisingly, support players aren't loving this. Some are even refusing to play the remaining strategists, particularly when it's their own team banning a character who they signalled they'd like to play as. That's an issue in any game with hero bans (looking at you, Overwatch community. Let me play Domina), but it is particularly frustrating when your second, third, and fourth heroes are probably getting banned as well.
At the very least, NetEase will probably do something about this, as even if it doesn't always do what we'd like, it's clear that it keeps an eye on the playerbase. It was quick to act when the triple support meta ran rampant, so hopefully, we'll reach some sort of resolution - although many would be upset if that solution was to go back down to two bans per team.
