Slay the Spire 2 is easily one of this year's biggest success stories, launching to a whopping peak player count of 574,638, easily surpassing recent releases like Marathon. Even at the time of writing, Slay the Spire 2 is the fourth most played game on Steam at the moment, and all of this is despite the game being in early access. Safe to say, the game is already an incredible success.

That being said, it seems as though developer MegaCrit has run into a bit of a problem recently regarding balance. Not only are some characters considered pretty overpowered, as determined by some long-time veterans of the series, but certain cards are also considered a bit too powerful, and MegaCrit was going to need to perform some careful balance tweaks to make things a little more fair.

Now that those balance tweaks are here, it's safe to say that everyone enjoying their busted builds right now are pretty fuming, as showcased by a brutal review bombing that took place earlier today.

Slay The Spire 2's Card Nerfs Have Caused An Almighty Review Bomb

Check out the Steam reviews for Slay the Spire 2, and you'll see that ever since launch, the game has been picking up around 100 negative reviews a day, which is fairly common for a game so popular. You'll then see an incredibly drastic increase, with the game having picked up a whopping 8,500 negative reviews at the time of writing, with that number still rising every minute.

From a brief glance at these negative reviews, we can see exactly what the issue that players have is, and that's the nerfing of various powerful cards that were being used to create infinite loops. It seems as though there is a consensus that something needed to be done, as high-difficulty gameplay was becoming samey and repetitive, but the direction that MegaCrit has gone isn't to everyone's liking.

Slay The Spire 2: 8 Biggest Changes From The First Game

Multiplayer, more cards, and new relics are only some of the changes in Slay the Spire's sequel.

MegaCrit has essentially been accused of nerfing the game's infinite loops and powerful cards, but doing little to actually boost other cards and make them more viable. One of these negative reviews by a user called Leo Dilu explains that users are being "forced into cycling and infinite-based builds" due to how difficult the game can be, and that nerfing these builds without providing any kind of alternative iss damaging the game further.

"Please stop trying to balance a single-player game by nerfing viable options," reads another review by a Steam user called Ghost14. "Some playstyles are not overused because it's overpowered, but is because other options are under powered." They then compare the game's current review bombing to that of the infamous Helldivers 2 review bombing, which happened as a result of developer Arrowhead Studios nerfing the flamethrower, one of the game's better weapons.

Thankfully, Slay the Spire 2 is still in early access, which means MegaCrit is still tinkering and tweaking with the game's balance to ensure that everything is in tip-top condition before its full release. Unfortunately for MegaCrit, the game is already being played by over 400,000 people a day, which means any goof-ups will be magnified just due to the player base. It's a little bit over the top to review bomb on such a scale, but you can't really argue that this is the only way that fans can make their voices known en masse.
