With each passing second, minute, hour, day, week, month and year, the Nintendo Wii grows older and older, and so do we as gamers. Earlier this year, the BBC even went as far as to call it retro, much to the dismay of gamers who don't want to recognize that 2006 was nearly two decades ago.

Now, RetroAchievements has joined the fold by classifying the Wii as "retro" enough to be part of its online platform for integrating modern-day achievements into retro games via emulation.

As first revealed on Twitter, Wii functionality will be coming to RetroAchievements beginning next year on March 19. Per the group, it's a tentative release that could be pushed back, and will only support Wii and WiiWare and not Virtual Console.

Still, it's a pretty major development when it comes to classifying hardware, especially considering that the list of RetroAchievements compatibility includes things like the Apple II, the Neo Geo and Atari Jaguar.

Wait, What Is RetroAchievements?

For those not in the know, RetroAchievements is an online platform that adds achievements to old school games on platforms that otherwise wouldn't have had them.

It's a cool way to bring life to games that you might otherwise not care too much about replaying by adding the kinds of achievements that would exist had the game been released today. Dozens of retro systems and hundreds of retro games are supported, and the lists are all curated by actual gamers with an interest in the game.

For instance, a user named RyCuLe is actively working on bringing achievements to Marvel Ultimate Alliance, while another gamer, Vancleef, similarly works on a list for Star Wars Battlefront 2.

It's a rather neat invention, though it's worth noting that it does make use of emulation integration, which obviously skirts the line of legality. That said, if that's not something you're comfortable with, you could always manually track achievements whilst playing a game.
