The legendary Japanese animated series, Neon Genesis Evangelion, celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026, and the IP owners behind it had some very interesting announcements for the occasion. A new Evangelion anime series is in the works, and Nier director Yoko Taro will be writing it while Automata composer Keiichi Okabe does the music.

Khara Inc, which owns the Evangelion IP, announced the new series and its talent on social media this week, with Yoko Taro himself confirming. We don’t know when exactly the new series will be ready at this time, but Khara did reveal that CloverWorks, known for popular anime adaptations of Spy x Family, Bocchi the Rock, and The Promised Neverland, will be the studio producing the new Evangelion series.

Evangelion itself is a hugely influential IP. The original series debuted in 1995, and flipped audiences on their head with its approach to mecha action, psychological and religious themes, and intensely graphic violence. Its main theme - A Cruel Angel’s Thesis - which was composed by Hidetoshi Sato and with vocals by Yoko Takahashi, is widely considered to be one of the most recognizable songs in Japanese animation. Meanwhile, Yoko Taro has built his own legend with the Nier series featuring its own themes of identity, purpose, and reality - much of which has arguably similar vibes to Evangelion.

Yoko Taro and Keiichi Okabe have their work cut out for them in taking on new works in the Evangelion universe, but if Nier Automata and Replicant are any indication, they are at least equipped for the job. Stay tuned to Yoko Taro’s topic as we watch for further updates.
