Sunderfolk marches on with 2.0 update and Shadowstone spinoff

Dreamhaven's D&D-like is going forward undaunted with some big plans for the future.

Dreamhaven and developer Secret Door had a grand idea last year, presenting players with D&D-style campaigns that were played using a two-screen setup. Unfortunately, Sunderfolk didn't off to the start that they might have wanted. They aren't giving up, though. Sunderfolk will continue to move forward with a big 2.0 update and, if anyhthing, Dreamhaven and Secret Door are expanding on that game's world with a new roguelite spinoff called Shadowstone.

Dreamhaven outlined Sunderfolk's big 2.0 additions back in a November deep dive. The game is adding traditional mouse and keyboard support for those who aren't totally into using their smartphones as controller inputs. This is aimed primarily at solo players, who will find user interface tweaks to reflect the addition of these new inputs. The update is also adding online multiplayer, though only on PC. Console players will still need to gather friends for couch co-op sessions. Finally, the game is adding new missions, scenarios, and a new playable tank character called the Vanguard. Those interested in learning exactly what Secret Door is building on can read my review of the 1.0 release from last year.

Dreamhaven's other big announcement is a whole new game set in the Sunderfolk world. Shadowstone is a roguelite for up to four players that follows captive heroes attempting to escape the Lich's confines and fight their way to freedom. The game will utilize Sunderfolk's turn-based tactical battles and also feature special powerups, skill cards, and hero synergies across randomized rooms filled with dangerous creatures.

Sunderfolk's 2.0 update now has a deployment date. Look for it to hit all platforms on Tuesday, March 10. Shadowstone, meanwhile, is going to need some time in the oven. It's going to release later this year as a Steam Early Access title.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
