  When I first started producing, it was just laying the loops (turntables and sampling keyboard - a full 0.7 seconds x 4 banks or 1.4 x 2 - spin fast and play low notes to fake longer samples) down on the 4-track for the whole duration, then live dropping parts in and out to tape.
  The first level of improvement was doing just 3 tracks that way, and once happy, bouncing those to the 4th track (with live dropin/out) and putting 3 more tracks in.
  Then I got Cool Edit Pro and did the same solid tracks of loops, but actually cut out pieces and did separate inserts for sections.
  Now that it's live instruments I have to build the breaks and changes in from jump and play straight through, so I'm re-recording a lot before happy. I still cut up chunks and rearrange to see what I what to do on the re-records.
  I guess I don't HAVE to play straight through, but I totally have to play straight through (or I don't feel I know the song well enough)!
