As if there was ever any doubt, there will be a new Call of Duty title in 2026. It's rumored to launch in October, well before Grand Theft Auto 6 takes over everyone's lives, and after a few-year hiatus, it's expected to be a new Modern Warfare title, specifically Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.
That said, if you were expecting the 2026 iteration of Call of Duty to finally leave last-gen consoles behind, then think again. Though not explicitly confirmed one way or the other, according to one insider, Modern Warfare 4 is being tested on the PlayStation 4.
Yes, you read that right. According to content creator, Alaix, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is being playtested on the PS4, a console that turns 13 years old in November.
Of course, playtesting is one thing, and releasing it is another. However, would it really be all that surprising if Modern Warfare 4, even if stripped down to just its multiplayer, debuted on the PlayStation 4?

Video game consoles have never been less affordable than they are today.
After all, so far COD has yet to skip the last-gen audience, even as more and more games, largely sports titles, finally leave behind the older hardware.
At one point, Modern Warfare 4 was eyeballing a release on the next generation of Xbox consoles, now known as Project Helix. If that had come to pass, and MW4 released on PS4, it would be the first three-generation release of its kind.
The Data Probably Backs Up A Release On Last-Gen Consoles
If recent Rockstar Games data leaks are to be believed, the PlayStation 4 is still mighty popular, even with the presence of the PS5 and rumors of a PS6. A leak of GTA Online player data revealed that nearly 2 million players on average engage with the game on PS4, well ahead of Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PC players, and only slightly behind the PS5.
That popularity likely extends to Call of Duty, too, with recent titles like Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 almost certainly holding their own. It probably justifies a last-gen release, and if not, at least testing to see if it's even possible, tech-wise.
