This last week, Sony released a fireside chat and business presentation detailing the success and future plans of its various departments. Gaming was, of course, among that, and we learned that the PlayStation 5 has surpassed the PS4 in monthly active users for the first time.

Sony Interactive President and CEO Hideaki Nishino shared the details of this milestone in Sony’s 2025 business presentation and fireside chat, detailing the health, previous sales, and future plans of the company. Overall, between the PS4 and PS5, there are reportedly 124 million monthly active users worldwide. That’s notable by itself, but this is the first time the numbers favored the PS5. In 2024’s business presentation, the PS4 and PS5 were still close to even in their player bases.

President Nishino was thrilled to speak to the solid continual growth of players on Sony platforms, as well as the shift of majority towards PS5:

This many years in, it’s interesting to see that the PS5 has only just now managed to surpass the PS4 in user activity. More than anything, that seems to speak to the longevity of the PS4. Stay tuned to the PlayStation topic for more news and coverage.
