Your Animal Crossing: New Horizons island will have a randomised layout of land, rivers, lakes, and shoreline, but it'll also randomly give you one of five possible native fruits. Of course, if you're an island perfectionist, you'll want to have all possible fruits on your island.

Regardless of which fruit you start with, it's possible to get the other four native fruits, and there's another fruit type up for grabs too. Here are all the fruit types and how to get them.

When you start a new save/island in New Horizons, you'll randomly be assigned one of the following fruits as your native fruit: apples, cherries, oranges, pears, or peaches.

Coconut is the only non-native fruit type that will not ever appear naturally on your island.

How To Get All Fruit Types

Though you'll naturally start with one fruit, you'll likely want to track down the others. All you really need is one of each of the other fruit types, and then you can dig a hole and bury that fruit for that specific fruit tree to then grow.

Here are the different ways to get all the fruit you need.

Native Fruit

Your native fruit is the one that grows across your island, and it will also be sold at Nook's Cranny for 400 Bells and displayed on your passport.

If you are starting a new island and want a specific fruit, you can keep resetting until you get the fruit of your choice.

Mystery Island Fruit

You'll also be designated another one of the five possible native fruits as a sister fruit, which will be the fruit type to appear on any Mystery Island Tours you go on. You can also find Coconuts by visiting Mystery Islands.

Mom's Letter

Not long after you start playing, your Mom will write you a letter and attach another of the five available native fruits.

Villagers

Villagers will sometimes gift you fruit, including non-native fruit.

The more you gift items to them, the more likely they are to send you gifts in return.

Other Players

It's unlikely you'll get all the fruit by playing alone, so eventually you'll need some help from friends or some kind strangers. You can do this in one of two ways:

  • Invite players to your island, and they can bring you the fruit you need.
  • Visit other players' islands and (with their permission) take some of their fruit or fruit trees.

You can only dig up other players' trees if you are Best Friends; otherwise, all you can do is shake the tree to get the fruit.

What Does Fruit Do?

Fruit is used in crafting and cooking, but it can also be eaten to boost the player's energy. Eating a fruit allows you to have enough energy to break a rock with a shovel or dig up a whole tree.

Being able to dig up a whole tree is a great way to move an entire fruit tree to your island rather than just taking the fruit and planting it.
